The Communication Chain

The revelation began with the Father and then proceeded from the Father to the Son then from the Son through an angel to His bond-servant John and finally, from John to the the seven churches that were in Asia Minor which is now Turkey. The revelation of Jesus Christ means the revelation (unveiling) is by or from Christ.

How did John receive the revelation? John was probably incarcerated on the island called Patmos because of his testimony of Jesus. He was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day when he heard a loud voice behind him, saying, “Write in a book what you see, and send it to the seven churches" (1:9-11).

The Original Recipients

The churches were listed as a circular postal circuit that a person delivering a letter might travel starting from the coastal city of Ephesus, then to Smyrna and Pergamum to the north, then in a southeastern direction to Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and finally Laodicea (1:11).

Vision of the Son of Man

When John turned around, he saw a vision of someone like a son of man (1:13) ... Jesus Christ, the Living One who was once dead but now alive for ever and ever (1:18). He had seven stars in his right hand and was walking among seven golden lampstand (1:16,12-13).

What do the following descriptions of "the son of man” mean?

  1. He was clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and
  2. With a golden sash girded across His chest.
  3. His head and His hair were white like white wool, like snow; and
  4. His eyes were like a flame of fire.
  5. His feet were like burnished bronze glowing in a furnace, and
  6. His voice was like the sound of many waters.
  7. Out of His mouth came a sharp two-edged sword; and
  8. His face was like the sun shining in its brilliance.

John was so overwhelmed with fear by what he saw, he fell down at Christ's feet like a dead man. Jesus placed His right hand on John and presented Himself as the resurrected One (once dead but now alive) and the One with authority over the state of death and Hades, the place of the dead (1:17-18).

Reflection

Jesus is coming with the clouds ... (1) every eye will see Him and (2) all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him (1:7). He was crucified and died for you and me. What will be your feelings at His coming? Are you ready to meet him? If not, how can you prepare for His coming?

Postscript on the Seven Spirits of God

  • Rev. 1:4 ... Greetings (1) from Him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and (2) from the seven spirits before God's throne and (3) from Jesus Christ

Are the seven spirits coequal to the other two sources?
  • Rev. 3:1 ... Christ holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.

Are the seven spirits of God distinguished from the seven stars?
  • Rev. 4:5 ... The seven blazing lamps before God's throne are the seven spirits.
  • Rev. 5:6 ... The seven eyes of the Lamb are the seven spirits sent out into all the world.
